Ever thought you’ve seen all the colours in the world? Well… think again!
Scientists just dropped a whole new shade bomb – meet ‘OLO’, a jaw-dropping, unseen shade of blue-green that’s literally out of this world.
But here’s the twist…
Only 5 people on Earth have ever seen it. And no, you’re (probably) not one of them.
Using a laser technique straight outta sci-fi – the Oz Vision System (yep, named after the Wizard of Oz), scientists from UC Berkeley managed to bypass regular human vision and unlock colours beyond the normal gamut. Aka: colours your eyes weren’t even built to see.
Did You Know?
🔹 ‘OLO’ = 010 in binary – that means only the M-cones in your eyes are firing. No L, no S, just M. (We’re talking pure middle-wavelength madness.)
🔹 Participants had to desaturate the colour by adding white light before they could match it to any known colour. Translation? This ain’t your average teal. OLO’s in a league of its own.
🔹 One scientist said it’s like if you’ve only ever seen pastel pink, and one day someone walks in wearing the most saturated red ever – and says, “Yeah, we just invented this.”
BUT HOLD UP…
Don’t expect to see OLO on your phone or TV screen anytime soon.
This colour needs fancy lasers, optic wizardry, and a bit of eyeball magic. So unless your eyes are enrolled in a PhD program… sorry, bestie, you’re gonna have to wait.
Critics be like:
“It is not a new colour,” said John Barbur, a vision scientist at City St George’s, University of London who said the research had “limited value”.
To which we say: bro, let us dream
Whether it’s a real discovery or just a high-def version of green, one thing’s for sure – science is getting trippy, and the future might be a LOT more colourful than we ever imagined.
So, next time someone says, “You’ve seen it all” – just say:
“Bet you haven’t seen OLO.”
