The Human Library: Where People Are Books and Stories Come to Life!

Imagine Borrowing a Human Instead of a Book!

What if instead of flipping through pages, you could sit across from a real person and hear their story? That’s exactly what The Human Library offers—a space where you don’t just read about people’s lives, you listen to them firsthand!

Founded in 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark, The Human Library is a global non-profit that aims to challenge stereotypes, promote understanding, and create meaningful conversations. Instead of books, you “borrow” people from different backgrounds, each representing a real-life experience—whether it’s battling addiction, living with autism, surviving abuse, or following an unconventional lifestyle. The tagline? “Unjudge someone.”

How Does It Work?

Much like a traditional library, The Human Library allows visitors (readers) to borrow “human books” for a one-on-one conversation. These books share their personal experiences openly and honestly, breaking down stigma and encouraging empathy.

Participants can choose from a diverse collection of human books such as:

📕 An Alcoholic – A journey of addiction and recovery.
📘 A Bipolar Warrior – Understanding mental health beyond the labels.
📗 A Holocaust Survivor – A gripping firsthand account of history.
📙 A Body Mod Extreme – The story behind tattoos, piercings, and body modifications.
📖 A Polyamorous Person – Breaking myths about non-monogamous relationships.

And many more! The goal? To dismantle biases and promote human connection.
