The Story of Holi – A Festival with Ancient Roots

Holi is one of India’s oldest and most vibrant festivals, celebrated for thousands of years. It is linked to several legends, the most popular being the story of Prahlad and Holika.

Holi is mentioned in ancient texts like the Bhavishya Purana and Narada Purana, dating back to 300-400 BCE!

The Legend of Holika Dahan

According to Hindu mythology, King Hiranyakashipu was a powerful demon king who wanted everyone to worship him. However, his son, Prahlad, was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Enraged by this, Hiranyakashipu plotted to kill Prahlad and sought help from his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to fire. She sat in a fire with Prahlad on her lap, hoping to burn him, but instead, Holika was burnt to ashes while Prahlad remained unharmed—symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Holika Dahan is celebrated a night before Holi, where people light bonfires, signifying the burning of negativity and the beginning of positivity and love.
