A six-foot-tall wax statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washington DC began to melt under the scorching summer heat. The statue, installed at an elementary school in Northwest Washington since February 2024, initially saw its head melt, followed by a leg separating from the torso and a foot turning into a blob. It also caused the supporting chair to sink into the ground.
Washington DC saw temperatures soar to more than 37 degrees Celsius.
The wax replica, titled ’40 ACRES: Camp Barker’ and created by US-based artist Sandy Williams IV, serves both as a representation of the Lincoln Memorial and as a functional candle. It weighs approximately 3,000 lbs (1360.777 kg) and was commissioned by the non-profit organisation Cultural DC.
The wax used in the sculpture has a congealing point of 60 degrees Celsius, meaning it begins to melt or harden at that temperature. But the heat wave accelerated it’s melting unexpectedly.
The head from the 6ft wax sculpture of the Lincoln Memorial is now under repair and will be reattached soon.
